Rossi profits from Biaggi error
Max Biaggi, for so long the only rider capable of challenging his fellow Italian Valentino Rossi for the 500cc world title, gave away the championship to his rival with an unforced error in the Pa- cific Grand Prix at the Japanese circuit of Motegi yesterday.
Having secured a significant lead over Rossi, Biaggi lost the front end of his Yamaha on lap six, allowing Rossi to take his eighth victory of the year and a 67-point lead in the championship. With 75 points available from the final three races, Rossi is almost certain to win the title.
"It was difficult to stay with Biaggi at the start. He was very fast through the corner where he crashed out – maybe too fast. I didn't push too hard because I was worried about my tyres, but I maintained a good rhythm and was able to take an important win," said Rossi.
Jeremy McWilliams, of Belfast, enjoyed a rare podium finish in the 250cc race, finishing third behind the winner, Tetsuya Harada. Manuel Poggiali won the 125cc race.
