Heinz-Harald Frentzen will test a Sauber car this week and may replace the Brazilian driver Felipe Massa at the American Grand Prix in Indianapolis a week on Sunday.

Massa was punished by FIA, the international governing body, for causing a collision with Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa during Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza and will be dropped by 10 positions on the starting grid in the next championship event.

"The FIA decision in Monza... forced us to think about an alternative," the team owner, Peter Sauber, said. "The penalty would be a big setback in our efforts to defend our position in the constructors' championship."

Sauber are currently fifth in the standings. Frentzen, who drove for Sauber between 1994 and 1996, left the financially-troubled Arrows team earlier this season.

Although he has signed a deal with Sauber, he was not expected to drive for them before next season.

Meanwhile, Colombia's Juan Pablo Montoya has set his sights on the one record that even Michael Schumacher cannot boast.

The Williams-BMW driver is looking to become the first man to win the world-famous Indianapolis 500 mile race and the United States Grand Prix at the same venue.

Montoya, who won the Indy 500 two years ago, will be making his second attempt at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"Last year I was very close," said Montoya, who snatched the lead from Schumacher only to retire soon after with hydraulic problems.

"I was very competitive. It'll be my second time, but it probably won't be the last time I go there," he said.

"I think my expectations are higher than normal. I think I have a pretty good chance."
