Don Givens, the former Republic of Ireland striker, has been appointed as Arsenal's new youth team coach. The 47-year-old ex-Manchester United, Luton, Queen's Park Rangers and Birmingham forward has returned to this country after four years as a coach at the leading Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax.

Kilmarnock, the Tennents Scottish Cup holders, have signed St Mirren's Scotland Under-21 international Martin Baker. The midfielder moves to Rugby Park with pounds 175,000 and the striker Tom Brown going to the First Division club in exchange. Baker, 22, has signed a three-year contract and becomes Bobby Williamson's first permanent signing since he took over as manager in December. Williamson signed the veteran Swede Robert Prytz on a short-term deal during the season's run-in but he has since been released.
