The season appears to be over for Brett Butler, the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder who suffered a fractured left hand on Monday night less than a week after his remarkable return from cancer surgery. The 39-year-old Butler is expected to miss three to four weeks after he was struck on the hand by a pitch from Cincinnati's Giovanni Carrara in Monday's 5-4 win over the Reds.

The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles won on Wednesday, keeping the Yankees' lead at 21/2 games in the American League East division. An error by the Detroit left fielder Ruben Sierra's allowed two runs to score in the seventh inning as New York defeated Detroit 7-3.
