Romania's Mihaela Melinte had her hammer throw of 69.00m, set in February in Bucharest, ratified yesterday as a world record by the IAAF. However, Melinte bettered that with 69.58 two weeks later in the same city. The new mark is expected to be ratified in the next few weeks.

John Regis, of Belgrave, the British 200m record holder, has pulled out of tomorrow's British League Division One match at Hendon and is therefore out of contention for Britain's Europa Cup team. Linford Christie will run in both sprints for Puma Thames Valley Harriers.

Sports bra manufacturer Berlei have agreed an initial two-year deal worth pounds 50,000 to sponsor the UK Women's League. The Berlei Shock Absorber Women's League begins on Sunday and runs to 24 August.
