Wigan, confirmed as champions on Tuesday, avenged one of their two defeats in the centenary championship yesterday with a 34-20 win against Leeds.

A crowd of almost 13,000 at Central Park saw Martin Offiah score his 28th try of the season to make him the joint top try-scorer with David Plange, the Hull KR winger. It is the sixth time, a record, Offiah has headed the list.

Wigan, playing their fourth game in eight days, finished eight points clear of Leeds, one more than their winning margin over the same side last season.

Tackling appeared not to be on the agenda at The Valley where London Broncos and Castleford shared 17 tries. London's full-back, Duncan McRae, marked his home debut with a hat-trick but Castleford, who scored one more try, ran out 50-44 winners with Richard Goddard converting seven of his nine attempts.

The England full-back, Paul Cook, scored a try and three goals as Bradford ended the season with a hard-earned win against the bottom club Workington in the snow at Odsal.

Cook, signed from Leeds in December, took his goal tally to 99 and produced a rare moment of inspiration with a solo try from 20 yards out.

Pity Highfield, bottom of the Second Division and without a win in the entire season. Their ignominious campaign ended with an 82-0 hammering at Hunslet.
