(First Edition)

THE Chinese diver Tan Liangde stepped out of the shadow of Greg Louganis after eight years to take the lead at the half-way point of the men's springboard.

Tan, 27, who was second to the great American at both Seoul and Los Angeles opened up a big lead of 17.280 points over the United States's great hope, Mark Lenzi, during yesterday's six dives.

The first three dives were compulsory, during which Tan took the lead, and he stretched away through the three voluntary dives, although Lenzi posted the day's highest single score with a reverse one-and-a-half somersault with three and a half twists, which eared him 80.190 points.
