London Eye: Belgian cyclist keeps himself too Well-oiled

Plenty of athletes have been pictured looking bleary-eyed after letting their hair down after they competed, such as swimmer Chad le Clos and his champagne cocktail costing £2,012, and Bradley Wiggins swigging vodka tonics, but the excess has claimed its first victim of the Games – the Belgian track cyclist Gijs Van Hoecke, who finished 15th in the omnium, has been sent home after being photographed in a drunken stupor, and embarrassingly covered in a dark liquid.

"I made a big mistake. I'm happy my parents didn't tell me off," the 20-year-old said. "They understand that I needed this."
