The Rio Paralympics will burst into life on Wednesday evening as athletes from across the globe take part in 11 days of competition a month after the thrilling culmination to the Olympics, the most successful away Games in Team GB history.

British audiences will be hoping for much of the same when the country’s finest disabled athletes take to the tracks, fields, courts and pitches with over 270 athletes expected to represent their country in Brazil across the next fortnight.

Team GB famously picked up 34 gold, 43 silver and 43 bronze medals four years ago, finishing third to China and Russia in the overall tally, and are in high spirits about the prospects of going even further in Rio this time around.

When is it?

The Paralympic opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday 7 September.

What time will it start?

The ceremony will kick off at 21:30pm BST (17:30pm local time in Brazil) live from Rio’s Maracana Stadium.

Where can I watch it?

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Channel 4, BBC Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra.
