Rio 2016: Boxer Jonas Junius 'arrested for alleged sexual assault' of housekeeper in Olympic Village

The Namibian light welterweight becomes the second fighter to be arrested on suspicion of sexual assault at the Games

Jonas Junius, the Namibian boxer, has been arrested for the attempted sexual assault of a housekeeper in the Olympic Village, according to reports.

The 22-year-old light welterweight was selected to be Namibia’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.

Police in Rio de Janeiro have said that Junius attempted to force himself on the housekeeper, according to Al Jazeera reporter Gabriel Elizondo.

"Police say he tried to force himself on a housekeeper," Elizondo's tweet reads. "Junius is expected to be transferred to Rio's Bangu prison later today," he added in a later tweet.

Junius was scheduled to fight France's Hassan Amzile in the men's light welter round of 32 on Thursday.

The Namibian is the second boxer to be arrested on allegations of sexual assault at the Rio Olympic Games, following the detainment of Morocco’s Hassan Saada on Friday.

Saada is alleged to have assaulted two housekeepers in the Olympic Village last Wednesday and was jailed for 15 days pending an investigation.
