Olympic diver Tom Daley is reportedly set to boycott the FINA Diving World Series in Moscow in May in a protest over Russia’s current anti-gay laws that have dominated the headlines due to the ongoing Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Daley revealed that he was going out with a man in December as he confirmed he was seeing screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, and instantly received a flurry of support for making the brave decision to come out while still competing at the highest level.

The Daily Star is now reporting that Daley will protest against Russia’s anti-gay laws by not attending the competition, even though his non-attendance could severely affect his world ranking.

The claims also go on to suggest that Daley has the full support of both his team-mates and Black, and he has also been credited with the inspiration that led to current England women captain Casey Stoney revealing she is gay this week.

Russia has come under pressure for banning the promotion of “non-traditional” sexuality in the build-up to the 2014 Sochi Games, with politicians and athletes across the globe calling on something to be done about the laws – or to boycott the Games altogether.

Fifa have also been criticised by Stoney for handing both Russia and Qatar the upcoming 2018 and 2022 World Cup’s respectively, given their stance on homosexuality.
