Racibng: Holland hits more trouble over whip: Stick difficulties for one young rider at Goodwood where John Reid demonstrated how to win with swing in the Celebration Mile

DARRYLL HOLLAND, one of the brightest young riding talents, will have to do some explaining to the Jockey Club this week after committing his second whip offence within 24 hours at Goodwood on Saturday.

Holland must appear before the Club's Disciplinary Committee as he has now broken the whip guidelines four times since early July. He was automatically referred to its Portman Square headquarters for his third breach at Goodwood on Friday, but was in trouble again at the Sussex track the following day.

The stewards there wanted to question him about his whip use on Wind In Her Hair, beaten a short-head by Zama, during the final two furlongs of the Solent Fillies Stakes. However, keen to get to the evening meeting at Windsor, he had left the track before the official weigh-in signal.

As a result, the Disciplinary Committee will also investigate Saturday's incident when it considers Holland's penalty, which is likely to be a lengthy suspension.

At the other end of the age scale, 43-year-old Mark Birch received just a caution after being found guilty of misuse of the whip for a hard-fought success on Atherton Green at Newcastle on Saturday.

The officials found him guilty of improper riding and cautioned him for striking the colt down the neck three times with his whip in the forehand position.

Back at Goodwood, Holland had earlier excelled in gaining a short-head victory on Margaret's Gift in the sprint handicap, his 50th success of the season. The 7lb penalty for the win guarantees a place in the Ayr Gold Cup, for which the Jack Berry-trained filly is25-1 with Ladbrokes.

Berry also landed the feature race in Ireland, the IR pounds 150,000 Tattersalls Breeders Stakes at the Curragh, with Palacegate Jack.

The horse to earn a foreign excursion at Goodwood was Swing Low, brought from last to first by John Reid in the Group Two Celebration Mile. He takes a swift step up to Group One level in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp next Sunday when Barathea and Kingmambo oppose.
