RONNIE BEGGAN, the Irish-born jump jockey is to retire at the end of the season. Beggan, 31, has won over 400 winners in Britain and abroad including the 1991 Colonial Cup.

Dale McKeown, who had been attempting to revive his riding career in the United States, will be out of action for at least two months after breaking his shoulder and arm in a fall at Stoneybrook, North Carolina, on Saturday when his mount broke a leg. McKeown was thrown to the ground and galloped over by the rest of the field.
