THE big battalions may have a fight on their hands in the Weatherbys Super Sprint Trophy at Newbury on Saturday, when Brief Glimpse, from the 10-strong yard of David Chappell, will mount a tough challenge to Richard Hannon's stable, seeking its third successive win in the race.

Hannon's Femme Savante, fifth in Royal Ascot's Queen Mary Stakes and a winner at Windsor since, has been made 7-2 favourite by Ladbrokes, from Brief Glimpse at 4-1 and Mark Johnston's Loveyoumillions at 5-1. The pounds 120,000 event, which has been won for the last two years by Hannon's Queen Mary Stakes winners, Risky in 1993 and Lyric Fantasy in 1992, is likely to be the most valuable ever run at Newbury.

The Super Sprint, a five- furlong dash restricted to juveniles bought at selected auctions for 30,000 guineas or less, has attracted 22 confirmed entries, of which Hannon has supplied six.

Brief Glimpse, bought for just 5,200gns for a racing company run by ex-Army friends who served with second-season trainer Chappell in Oman, is unbeaten in two starts, including a 10-length debut victory at Kempton. Her regular jockey Michael Hills will sweat to his minimum to take the ride on the filly set to carry 8st.

Chappell said yesterday: 'Michael's last words after she won at Windsor were to say he was going to the sauna. I would never be confident but I expect her to run extremely well.'

SUPER SPRINT: Ladbrokes: 7-2 Femme Savante, 4-1 Brief Glimpse, 5-1 Loveyoumillions, 8-1 Brave Music, 10-1 Prusian Flag, 12-1 Quiz Time, 16-1 others. William Hill: 4-1 Brief Glimpse, Loveyoumillions, 11- 2 Femme Savante, 8-1 Brave Music, 12-1 Malafemmena, 14-1 Dimes, Prussian Flag, Super Deeds, 16-1 others.
