Racing: Inquiry into desperate Dan
Dan De Man's performance at Wetherby on Saturday led to the horse's trainer, Lynn Siddall, and jockey, Martin Foster, facing the stewards.
Their explanations were recorded. The well-backed 3-1 shot had made strong late headway to take fifth place in the last race. Foster kept Dan De Man at the rear and did not appear to ask him for any serious effort until three flights from home.
Foster said the horse was inclined to run free early on and did not jump or travel fluently because of the soft ground. He said he had tried to pick Dan De Man up going into the home turn but the horse found nothing. Miss Siddall said she was satisfied with Foster's riding and confirmed her runner did not act on soft going.
Dan De Man had won his previous race by eight lengths.
