Racing: Sheikh's stud hit by equine flu outbreak
The equine influenza crisis in Australia escalated yesterday when it was confirmed that the disease has spread to the Hunter Valley branch of Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Studs. Three yearlings on the farm, in New South Wales, have tested positive to the disease – even though the management has been observing strict biosecurity protocols and limiting movement of horses and people.
The latest development, apparently confirming that the contagion is airborne, will increase calls for a costly vaccination programme. Darley already has 17 stallions quarantined in Sydney.
