Stan Hey: 6-5 against
Saturday 07 June 2008
The build-up to the Derby has been an equine version of Big Brother. New Approach finished second in the 2000 Guineas but it was announced he would not join his housemates at Epsom. He was left on the entry list "by mistake", it seemed, but last week he was back in again! Casual Conquest was added and others have been allowed in late. Will there be a surprise entrant for Clare Balding, racing's Davina McCall, to announce today – Trigger, Black Beauty?
Those likely to be voted out include Rio De La Plata, Bougereau, Alan Devonshire and Maidstone Mixture, while Frozen Fire and Washington Irving may not stay. New Approach is in to 5-1 and his Derby genes (from Galileo) might come into play, if his temperament does not. But Casual Conquest (£10 win, at 4-1 generally) has breeding, stamina, a turn of foot and a shrewd handler, Dermot Weld. Sir Michael Stoute's Tartan Bearer is best for a £5 exacta (first and second forecast).
There could be some surprise evictions in next week's US Open – Tiger Woods is back from two months off after knee surgery; Ernie Els is a shadow of the once-mighty "Big Easy"; Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen have not won a major recently.
Phil Mickelson can hang on (£10 win at 8-1, generally); fivers each-way go on Geoff Ogilvy (40-1 Blue Square), Justin Rose (40-1 Boylesports) and Andres Romero (80-1 Ladbrokes). The course, with sadistic USGA pin-placings, will be the big winner.
Last week's wagers
Kryptonite broke well in the Greyhound Derby but found himself completely mullered on the first bend by the dog in trap two. So our bet was Pedigree Chum (£5 lost).
