Rowell's theory of dynamics

England will put the dour Grand Slam match against Scotland behind them and revert to the dynamic style they tried to adopt in earlier games against Argentina in their first group match on Saturday.

Jack Rowell, the England manager, said yesterday: "That's what we're looking forward to doing - opposition permitting. We have some very good running backs in Will Carling and Jeremy Guscott. It would be a crime not to use them."

Rowell said Argentina's main weakness was not being very creative. "They defend very well and need breaking down by powerful opponents."

England, looking to counter Argentina's strong scrummaging, concentrated on this area during their morning training session yesterday. "We see Argentina as a dangerous team with a good scrum, driving maul, a good kicking game and a very good line-out drill," Rowell said, pointing out that the Pumas beat England in the second Test of their 1990 tour of Argentina.

"They do the basics very well, and if they put pressure on England in England's half, who knows what might happen? We expect them to get the ball to try and do it."

Victor Ubogu, England's tight-head prop, also recalled the 1990 trip to Argentina, which was his first England tour. "It was proof that it is very difficult to win a Test series against Argentina. You have got to be well prepared," he said.

However, the last time the two sides met in London two months later, England crushed the Pumas 51-0.
