ROWING:
Redgrave & Pinsent on cruise control
Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent, joined by Fred Scarlett and Ben Hunt Davis, overcame foul conditions in the middle of the Fours Head of the River Race to take the coxless pennant on the London Tideway, writes Hugh Matheson. The overall title went to the other half of the world champion four, racing in a quadruple scull stroked by James Cracknell with Tim Foster and Ed Coode in the middle, topped off by Bobby Thatcher. Second place was the reward for the top Notts County quad with 38-year-old Carl Smith at No 2. Stroked by the Irish lightweight Gearoid Towey and with Tom Kay at three and Gareth Davies in the bows, the NCRA quad finished five seconds ahead of last year's winners.
