HALIFAX moved into fourth place in the championship table after a 28-16 win over Castleford, but their success was marred by a last-minute brawl.

Their towering forward Adam Fogerty, a former British heavyweight boxing contender, was sent off along with the Castleford captain, Lee Crooks, after more than a dozen players joined the melee.

Halifax were indebted to a superb display from their scrum-half Paul Bishop who, apart from setting up a try for Gary Divorty, landed six goals to take his points tally to 203.

Leeds overcame a strong early challenge from Sheffield Eagles to return to form with a 46-10 victory. They scored eight tries despite being without three Test stars who were on duty with Great Britain in France.

Graham Holroyd, the Leeds stand-off, marked an enterprising debut by scoring two second-half tries which helped to take the home side clear after Sheffield had faded badly late in the game.

In the only other championship match, Salford took another important step away from the relegation zone with a 26-10 win over Hull. Salford scored five tries, including one from the former Great Britain winger, Phil Ford, who finished off a slick break from full-back Peter Williams.
