Rugby League: Round-up - Wolves roar to first win

WARRINGTON WOLVES secured their first Super League points of the season yesterday with a 31-20 win over Halifax, leaving Huddersfield at the foot of the table.

In a bad-tempered affair, third-placed Halifax fell four points behind the top two - Wigan and Leeds - as Wolves scored five tries, including two from Toa Kohe-Love. But the match was marred by the dismissals of Jon Roper and the Halifax captain, Karl Harrison, for nasty challenges.

Huddersfield are still without a win - or a point - after a dismal display at the Willows against Salford. Salford scored eight tries, including two apiece from forward David Bradbury and Nathan McAvoy, in their 40- 6 rout.

Castleford bounced back from defeat against Halifax and Leeds with a 31-18 win over Hull. Promoted Sharks, who won their first two league matches, slipped to their third successive defeat after being over-run in the first half. The former Hull winger Richard Gay did his old club no favours by scoring two first-half tries as Castleford drew level with Hull in mid- table.

Whitehaven kept track of Division One leaders Wakefield, who did not play yesterday, with a 20-12 win over Swinton. Second-placed Wanderers are still three points adrift of the top club and needed an injury-time try to settle a frantic encounter.

Mark Wallace got two tries for Whitehaven while Swinton's Andy Craig and Simon Ashcroft also touched down. And Swinton were denied a try at the flag in the dying seconds after the referee had consulted with fellow officials.
