Rugby League Round-Up: Warrington on top

WARRINGTON took advantage of Wigan's unexpected defeat to go back to the top of the Stones Bitter Championship after a hard-fought 27-24 win at Featherstone Rovers.

Three tries in eight minutes put them in charge after Rovers' early lead was reduced by Craig Teitzal's try. Then Allan Bateman, Andy Bennett and Lee Penny scored to put Warrington 18-8 ahead. Featherstone closed the gap before half-time with Carl Gibson's try and a Martin Pearson goal.

Jonathan Davies increased the lead with a drop goal and a penalty, and Mark Hilton's try put them ahead 27-14 but they were given a scare when Pearson scored his second try and he then converted Leo Casey's try.

Sheffield Eagles salvaged a remarkable 46-46 draw at Headingley with two very late tries. Paul Carr went over for his second try in the 79th minute to make the score 46-40 and then two minutes into injury time Mark Aston added the goal to his own try to deny Leeds.

The home side had wiped out a 20- 12 half-time deficit with three tries in six minutes and with six minutes left led 46-34 before the dramatic end brought the try tally to 16.

Widnes took charge early on against Halifax when Adrian Hadley scored after four minutes. They added three more tries in the first half, but it took another four minutes from time by Christian Cyrer to clinch the points.
