The European Champions Cup reached its climax on Saturday night as Leinster beat Racing 92 in a hard-fought final at Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium to win the tournament for the fourth time in their history, equalling Toulouse as the only other side to achieve that feat.

In what proved to be the second try-less final in the space of three years, Leinster sealed victory via an Isa Nacewa penalty 90 seconds from time, dealing a cruel blow to a depleted Racing side that had matched Leinster for most of the match despite losing both Pat Lambie and Dan Carter to injury – along with the already sidelined Maxime Machaenaud.

The victory sees the aptly-named Anthony Foley Memorial Trophy – named after the late Munster coach – return to Irish hands after a six-year absence, and ends eight months of European competition between the continent’s best sides.

It proves a tournament to forget though for English sides as only Saracens made the last-eight, losing to the eventual champions, while Welsh side Scarlets reached the semi-finals for this first time since 2007.
