Romania were given a huge standing ovation by the Wembley Stadium crowd despite being demolished 44-10 by a rampant Ireland side, but the entertainment didn’t stop there.

As the two sides both went on a lap of honour around the home of English football – which has since been transformed into the venue of the largest Rugby World Cup crowd ever seen as 89,267 watched Sunday afternoon’s encounter – thousands of fans remained to applaud their efforts. The something magical happened.

The Romanian side all grabbed each other shoulder-to-shoulder and walked back out onto the pitch, facing the tunnel and Club Wembley section, in what appeared to be a somewhat bizarre photo opportunity.

But it was at this point that the replacement scrum-half, Florin Surugiu, made his way out from the centre of his teammates and met his girlfriend, who had been helped down to pitchside.

The 30-year-old suddenly did the unthinkable; he got down onto one knee and proposed in front of those fans still in the stadium, with all 22 of his teammates watching behind. The pressure was on.
