Round-Up: Brennan faces lengthy ban after brawl with fans

Toulouse's Test veteran Trevor Brennan faces a lengthy ban after being at the centre of heated off-the-field incidents at Stade Ernest Wallon yesterday.

Former Ireland lock Brennan was warming up with the rest of the Toulouse replacements at the start of the second half of their 28-13 Heineken Cup win over Ulster, when he took exception to something an Ulster fan said to him. The 33-year-old hurdled an advertising hoarding and was involved in a fracas with visiting fans. He was eventually dragged away, before another Toulouse replacement ­ former Wales skipper Gareth Thomas ­ also reacted and approached the same section of fans. He was restrained by match stewards before reaching them.

Brennan took the field in the 48th minute, but was almost immediately sin-binned for trading punches with Ulster's Australian lock Justin Harrison.

In the European Challenge Cup, Harlequins, who beat Connacht 26-10 at the Stoop on Saturday, knew that all Newcastle needed from their match against Petrarca Padova in Italy was a bonus-point win. And the Falcons secured the final runners-up place in the last eight at about the time that the full-back Mike Brown was touching down for Harlequins' second try in their Pool Four match.

Ollie Phillips was the Newcastle hero, the winger scoring two tries in the opening 12 minutes. The England fly-half Toby Flood finished with a try and five conversions as Newcastle racked up a 50-6 victory: the reward is a quarter-final trip to Clermont Auvergne, who finished unbeaten in Pool Five after a 45-3 demolition of Albi.

Bath finished top of the pool, their 42-17 win over Montpellier at the Rec leaving them unbeaten and the French side languishing at the bottom of the table. That result earned Bath a home quarter-final against Bristol, who wrapped up their Pool One campaign with a victory over Bucharest.
