Stephen Hendry's first match as a father resulted in a resounding defeat at the Grand Prix in Bournemouth last night. The world champion, whose wife Mandy gave birth to a son a fortnight ago, failed to reach the televised phase of the tournament as he lost 5-1 to the 19-year-old Welshman Matthew Stevens. The fifth seed, Nigel Bond, and sixth seed Alan McManus were also eliminated in the first round. Bond lost 5-1 to the little known Oliver King from Farnham, while McManus went down 5-2 to Middlesbrough's Jon Birch.
