Aston Villa and Liverpool, in South Africa for a series of friendly matches, were caught up in a riot while watching a league game between Kaizer Chiefs and their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. The match, played in Soweto, was abandoned after the award of a penalty to the Chiefs, who were leading 1-0, inspired some Pirates fans to invade the pitch. They began pelting the match officials with cans and an assortment of objects, while others set fire to seats and grassy areas of the FNB stadium. The blazes were extinguished by the fire brigade.
