JOHN ELWAY, the Denver Broncos quarterback, has signed a new contract with the club which is reported to be worth dollars 20m ( pounds 13.8m) over four years. If so it will make him the highest paid player in the NFL.

RONNIE LOTT, the Los Angeles Raiders safety, became the first leading player to change clubs under the new free agency laws when he joined the New York Jets yesterday. Lott, 33, joined the Raiders two years ago from the San Francisco 49ers, with whom he won four Super Bowls.
