THE deposed Australian cricket vice- captain, Geoff Marsh, made a promising start in his bid to regain his opening batting position in this year's five-Test series against the West Indies when he scored an unbeaten 51 in Western Australia's 10- wicket victory over Victoria in a Mercantile Mutual Cup limited-overs match which launched the new Australian season yesterday.

MERCANTILE MUTUAL CUP (One-day match, Perth): Victoria 132 (D S Lehmann 37; D R Martyn 3-3, T M Moody 3-29, B A Reid 2-30); Western Australia 135 for 0 (M R J Veletta 72, G R Marsh 51). Western Australia won by 10 wickets.
