Rhone-Poulenc, British Steel II and Interspray were disputing the lead as the 10 identical 67ft yachts in the British Steel Ushant-Fastnet race fought through a 25- knot westerly up the 250-mile leg from north-west France to the Fastnet Rock off the south-west of Ireland. The leaders were expected to round the rock before midnight last night and turn for back past the Scillies and then up the English Channel to Southampton where they are due to finish the 850-mile race on Tuesday.
