IVAN LENDL and Carlos Costa, the top two seeds, made surprise quarter-final departures from the Bordeaux Open tournament yesterday. Lendl, the No 1 seed, lost his cool and his match 7-5, 6-4 to local favourite, Cedric Pioline, who took advantage of Lendl's anger at a line call to hold his serve then break for the first set. Second seed Costa was beaten 7-6, 7-6 by Ukraine's Andrei Medvedev.
SWEDEN'S Magnus Gustafsson has a foot injury and will miss this month's Davis Cup semi-final against the United States in Minneapolis later this month. He will be replaced by Magnus Larsson.
