WENDY TURNBULL was re-appointed as Australian Federation Cup captain for the ninth successive year yesterday. Geoff Pollard, the Tennis Australia president, announced Turnbull had retained the non-playing position ahead of Lesley Hunt and Judy Dalton, both of whom lodged challenges. Turnbull led Australia to the semi-finals in the 1992 Federation Cup. The 1993 Federation Cup will be played in Frankfurt from 18 to 25 July.

MIDLAND BANK is to end its sponsorship of the women's indoor tournament at Brighton after five years. The decision, made by Midland for 'policy' reasons, comes at the end of a difficult year for the women's game. Sponsors have already withdrawn from backing the pre-Wimbledon tournaments at Eastbourne and Birmingham. Pilkington Glass, who pulled out of the Eastbourne event, have been replaced by Volkswagen. But the Lawn Tennis Association is still seeking a replacement for Dow Chemicals, who supported Birmingham. Midland, who took over as title sponsor of Brighton week from Pretty Polly, has invested pounds 1.5m in the championships.
