GERMANY and Spain, the top two seeds, will meet in today's Federation Cup final in Frankfurt. In yesterday's semi-finals Steffi Graf led Germany to victory over the United States, brushing aside Lori McNeil 6-0, 6-3 to give the favourites an unbeatable lead over last year's finalists. Earlier, the German No 2, Anke Huber, had defeated Gigi Fernandez 7-5, 6-3. Defending champions Spain were just as impressive against unseeded Australia, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario beating Nicole Provis 6-0, 6-3 and Conchita Martinez beating Rachel McQuillan 6-1, 6-4.

MARY JOE FERNANDEZ retired in her quarter-final against Tami Whitlinger in the Pathmark Classic in Mahwah, New Jersey yesterday with an injury to her right hip. She is expected to be fit in time to represent the United States at the Olympics.

IVAN LENDL, the former Czechoslovakian world No 1 recently naturalised as an American, lost to Sweden's Henrik Holm 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter-final of the Nations Bank Classic in Washington. Holm, who rated the win as the best of his career, meets Derrick Rostagno in his first tournament semi-final.

ANDREI MEDVEDEV of the Ukraine beat Austria's Thomas Muster in straight sets yesterday to reach today's final of the Stuttgart Open clay court tournament. He meets Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, who beat Czechoslovakia's Karel Novacek, also in straight sets, in the other semi-final.
