Sport: The week in review
MANCHESTER UNITED were left to concentrate on football's Premier League when Sheffield United knocked them out of the FA Cup on Sunday - despite a fine goal from Ryan Giggs. Jamie Hoyland and Glyn Hodges quickly replied for Sheffield.
One player who has been accused of failing to reproduce his club form for his country performed what may turn out to be his international swan-song at Wembley in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino. John Barnes was fairly ordinary in England's 6-0 victory and cannot be certain of another chance to show his gifts.
But if it was his last game for England, the boos from the crowd whenever he touched the ball was a pathetic farewell. At least David Platt lived up to his billing, the Juventus player scoring four goals on his debut as captain.
