Tomorrow: The first Derby, won by Diomed, was run at Epsom in 1780. Peter Shilton made his Football League debut in 1966, for Leicester City.
Thursday: Roger Bannister became the first man to run the mile in under four minutes in 1954 (3 mins, 59.4sec). The Kentucky Derby was run for the first time at Churchill Downs in 1875.
Saturday: Jack Hobbs completed his 100th first class century on this day in 1923.
Sunday: Joe Davis beat Tom Dennis 20-11 in Birmingham, to win the first World Professional Snooker Championship in 1927. Prize money: 52.5p (10 shillings and sixpence).
