The Derby County striker Deon Burton has been voted Jamaica's sports personality of the year after helping his country qualify for the World Cup finals. The Reading-born Burton, 21, took the award ahead of the cricketer Courtney Walsh after scoring crucial goals in Jamaica's qualifying matches against America and Costa Rica.
Benedict McCarthy scored twice yesterday to earn the defending champions, South Africa, a place in the final of the African Nations' Cup. McCarthy scored in the 60th minute and the 22nd minute of extra time against the Democratic Republic of Congo to give his side a 2-1 win in the semi-final in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to become the tournament's top scorer with seven goals. South Africa, the last World Cup qualifiers still in the competition, had to come from behind after a substitute, Keve Bembuana, had put the Democratic Republic of Congo ahead in the 48th minute.
