UEFA, the governing body of European football, is threatening to ban Marseille from the European Cup over the match-rigging allegations against the holders without waiting for the judgment of the French federation, which is scheduled to start hearings into the case on 6 September. In a separate development yesterday French police raided the Paris offices of the Marseille president, Bernard Tapie, for the fifth time in a month in connection with the allegations.

SEVILLE have fined Diego Maradona between dollars 3 and dollars 3.5m ( pounds 2- pounds 2.4m) for behaviour detrimental to the club it has been reported in Spain. Maradona, who is in Argentina, was sacked by Seville at the end of June.

AJAX are set to become the first European club to play 'indoors'. They are having a new pounds 93m stadium built which will be the first in Europe to have a retractable roof.
