IAN PORTERFIELD, the former Chelsea and Reading manager, has had his contract as the coach of the Zambian national team extended for a year. He has held the post since July, helping them to qualify for next year's African Nations' Cup finals in Tunisia after most of their players and coaching staff were killed in an air crash in April.

BILLY McEWAN, sacked as the manager of Darlington six weeks ago, has become the reserve-team coach at Derby County.

GEOFFREY RICHMOND was re-instated as the chairman of Scarborough yesterday, five days after resigning, after three other directors with whom he had been in dispute resigned.

UEFA yesterday ordered Turkey to play next Tuesday's European Under-21 Championship match against Norway behind closed doors, after a Polish player was struck by a coin in an Under-21 game in Istanbul last month.
