THIS year's Paris-Dakar rally suffered its first fatality on Tuesday. Michel Sansen, a 59-year-old motorcyclist from Belgium, was killed when his BMW crashed as he was riding to the start line of the ninth stage in Mauritania. His was the 30th fatality in the rally's 14-year history.

PARIS-DAKAR RALLY 11th special stage (151km): 1 H Auriol (Fr) Citroen ZX 57min 12sec; 2 B Saby (Fr) Mitsubishi +2min 15sec; 3 J-P Fontenay (Fr) Mitsubishi +2:33; 4 E Weber (Ger) Mitsubishi +2:36; 5 K Shinozuka (Japan) Mitsubishi +3:42. 12th special stage (30km): 1 Lartigue 32:21; 2 Auriol +37sec; 3 Fontenay +1min 5sec; 4 Shinozuka +3:06; 5 Servia (Sp) Lancia +8:12. Overall: 1 Lartigue 20hr 44min 55sec; 2 Shinozuka +56.38; 3 Auriol +1:28.44; 4 Fontenay 1:49.36.
