Southampton will host the start of the 2001-2002 Volvo Ocean Race. The round-the-world yacht race - formerly know as the Whitbread Round- the-World Race - will begin in September 2001 with a finish in May or June 2002. The announcement ends speculation that the race would move back to Portsmouth.

Darren Bundock, from Australia, and his crew John Forbes lifted the Tornado world title in style yesterday by winning the final two races of the series. It was Bundock's first world title in this high performance Olympic class. But the triumph was familiar territory for Forbes, a winner three times previously while sailing with Mitch Booth who finished third this time.
