Sporting Digest: Ski Jumping
Martin Schmitt, the world champion, yesterday flew to a record- breaking 214.5 metres for his 10th win of the season at the World Cup event in Planica, Slovenia. The German broke the sport's record, set by the Norwegian Lasse Ottesen with 212m in 1997, with his second jump.
Valeriy Kobelyev, the Russian ski-jumper who crashed during a large hill qualifying session in Planica, Slovenia on Thursday, suffering concussion and severe bruising to the neck, remains in stable but critical condition in hospital in the capital, Ljubljana.
