SCOTLAND'S Ross Matheson beat Arne Thoms of Germany in straight sets to win the Mercury Communications Challenge title in Bristol yesterday. In a match lasting just over an hour, the 6ft 5in Glaswegian triumphed 6-3, 6-4. Forced to qualify for the tournament, Matheson, 24, also beat Chris Bailey, the British No 5, in an earlier round.

HANA MANDLIKOVA, winner of four Grand Slam singles titles, and Bud Collins, one of America's leading journalists, were inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island on Saturday. Mandlikova, the Czech-born Australian, won 27 singles titles during her career in the 1980s but is best remembered for winning the Australian Open twice and triumphing at the US and French Opens.
