The Australians won the first four World Barefoot Championships, the United States the next three and in the eighth Championship, which concludes at Lakeside, Thurrock, this weekend, they are already showing their form. Britain, however, are going for their fourth consecutive bronze medal and already Richard Crossland, from Uxbridge, is leading the slalom discipline. He and David Nutt, of Oxfordshire, have set personal bests. The women enter the tournament today and Kim Harding, from Essex, is Britain's best prospect for a gold medal in the jumps. But the favourite with the crowds is the youngest competitor, Lucy Scopes, aged 11 from Romford.

How to get there: Lakeside, Thurrock, Essex, is signposted from junctions 30 and 31 of M25 or by direct access on A13, A1306 and West Thurrock Way. Admission: free. Grandstand seat pounds 2 daily. Competition runs today from 8am to 6pm, tomorrow 9am-6pm and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
