The season's first major event, the start of the National Trophy series, is being held at a new venue in Manchester this Sunday. Philips Park is next to the National Velodrome and has been provided as a centre for off-road racing to complement the new indoor track. Steve Douce defends the senior title he won for the sixth time last year. Despite winning the series, however, he had a disappointing year when was dogged by an illness which eventually kept him out of the world championship. This time he will want to make an instant impression, though Roger Hammond, the national champion who continues to improve in the senior ranks, will have other ideas.

Philips Park is next to velodrome. Programme: Juveniles (11am), juniors, veterans, women (noon), under-12s (1pm), senior Trophy (2pm).
