Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer and Jose- Maria Olazabal, installed as favourite before this year's event, are competing in the Benson and Hedges International Open, the first European Tour event of the season in Britain. The damp start at St Mellion is already taking its toll because the course Jack Nicklaus built is not for the faint-hearted when wind and rain come into play. St Mellion is tight and narrow, placing accuracy at a premium. It is long and set in an undulating landscape marked with steep climbs, falls and gullys. Tough for the professional, but rewarding for the visitor, as the high points of St Mellion provide excellent spectating.

How to get there: St Mellion Golf and Country Club, nr Saltash, Cornwall, is situated on the A388 Plymouth to Callington road, signposted from the Tamar Bridge. Admission: today and tomorrow: pounds 12 adults, pounds 6 children under-16/OAPs; Sunday: pounds 14, pounds 7. Parking is free. (Tel: 0579-50101).
