Squash: Jahangir's world-title finale

JAHANGIR KHAN achieved the last goal of his unrivalled career yesterday when he helped Pakistan regain the World Team Championship title from Australia, writes Richard Eaton from Karachi.

In beating Brett Martin, Jahangir captured the vital opening rubber and avenged his defeat three days earlier against the world No 4 during Pakistan's 2-1 defeat against the Australians in their group match.

Jahangir, 18 days into a comeback after nine months out of action, played with one thigh strapped. He started moderately, but won 6-9, 9-1, 9-5, 9-3 to set up Pakistan's 3-0 victory. The game lasted 71 minutes and yet Jahangir was the stronger of the two. Zarak Jahan Khan gave Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead when he unexpectedly won 9-4, 9-2, 6-9, 2-9, 10-9 against Rodney Eyles, ranked No 6 in the world. Jansher Khan beat Rodney Martin 9-2, 9-0, 9-0.

England, who played so well in a 2-1 defeat against Pakistan in the semi-finals, won the bronze medal with a 3-0 victory over Finland.
