Successful end to Britain's Atlanta trip

Great Britain continued their fine form in Atlanta yesterday with their second win against Spain, the Olympic champions, this week thanks to two goals from the Scottish striker Sue MacDonald. She gave Britain a splendid send-off when, just three minutes into the game, she pounced on a loose clearance, drove into the circle and crashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Just before the interval Mireia Hernandez took advantage of some sloppy British defending to scramble the ball home for the equaliser. With time running out Tina Cullen won a penalty stroke in the 67th minute to give MacDonald her chance from the spot.

A frustrated British manager, Jenny Cardwell, said after the game: "Life would be easy if we took our chances." However, with two wins over the Spanish and a win and a draw against the highly fancied Americans, Britain's form is looking good.

At home the men's HA Cup semi-finals take place today at Milton Keynes with the final tomorrow. Teddington, last season's beaten finalists, will be looking for their fifth successive final appearance but first have to dispose of the exciting Reading side.

With Britain's captain, Jason Laslett, and Phil McGuire restored to full fitness, Teddington will be selecting from a full squad for only the second time this season and could have the advantage on experience, particularly as Reading, like Old Loughtonians, East Grinstead's opponents in the second semi-final, have shown inconsistency in crucial League games.

Teddington could spring a surprise by playing Jon Ebsworth, who shone for England's Under 18's in Paris at Easter, in goal in place of first- choice James French.
