Sussex fall to Cairns

The New Zealander, Chris Cairns, picked up eight wickets for 47 runs as Nottinghamshire dismissed Sussex for 134 at Arundel. It might have been worse for the home side, who were 14 for 5 at one stage.

Franklyn Stephenson (68) and Ian Salisbury (38) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 85 before the last five wickets fell for 35 runs. Nottinghamshire found batting much easier, with Tim Robinson making 72 as they reached 161 for 5 at the close.

An innings of 181 by Martin Love steered Young Australia to a score of 386 for 3 and an overall lead of 460 against Somerset. at Taunton.

Love's chanceless innings came off 190 balls and contained 24 fours and three sixes, all crashed over a short mid-wicket boundary.

Somerset's spinners Harvey Trump and Jeremy Batty bore the brunt of a fierce Australia onslaught, conceding 109 and 128 runs respectively.

Love eventually fell to the occasional off-cutters of Marcus Trescothick when he clipped a catch to Batty at mid-wicket.

Love shared an opening stand of 169 with Matthew Hayden, who struck 67 before he was stumped to give Harvey Trump a deserved wicket.

Before lunch, Somerset had conceded a first innings deficit of 74 when they took their overnight 176 for four through to 306 for nine declared.

Piran Holloway continued his recent impressive form with an unbeaten 59, while paceman Brad Williams returned four for 79 in 15.3 overs.
