Tennis: McEnroe out of Cup captaincy
JOHN McENROE has removed his name from the list of candidates to succeed Tom Gorman as captain on the United States Davis Cup team, the US Tennis Association announced yesterday.
A short statement from McEnroe said: 'Due to personal considerations, John McEnroe has withdrawn his name from the list of candidates to replace Tom Gorman as the US Davis Cup team captain.'
The USTA is expected as early as next week to announce a successor to Gorman, who stepped down after eight years as Davis Cup captain last month.
McEnroe said he had left open the option of returning to the Davis Cup as a player and had not ruled out the possibility of becoming US team captain in the future. Among the leading candidates are the former US Open champion, Stan Smith, Brad Gilbert and Tom Gullikson.
