THE American Janet Newberry, a former Italian Open champion and twice a semi-finalist at the French Open, has been appointed manager of women's national training by the Lawn Tennis Association, writes John Roberts.

A former director of women's tennis for the United States Tennis Association, Newberry's pupils have included two of America's leading youngsters, Lindsay Davenport and Chanda Rubin.

Newberry, 40, will be responsible for appointing and directing coaches, training players on the international circuit, and planning their schedules, and controlling budgets for women's matches and tours.

Her appointment completes the LTA's management structure for women's national training. The team also includes Mark Cox and Olga Morozova, with the Rover junior initiative, and Ann Jones, the international team captain.
